The fire which occurred on 17 June 1991 caused major disruption in the school. The headteacher, John Thurley, was off sick, recovering from a minor operation, and the school was in the charge of the two deputy headteachers,Valerie Randerson and Mike Leader.
The fire damage was centred on the Typing room (V105), which was completely gutted . One of the supporting concrete roof beams was badly damaged and had to be replaced. The other rooms in the Vanbrugh block had extensive smoke damage. The smoke was so thick and toxic that it coated the breathing apparatus used by the Fire Brigade with a thick oily substance which could not be cleaned and the equipment had to be subsequently discarded.
