There is a large archive covering all periods of the history of the Blue Coat Schools in Greenwich. The archive may be consulted by appointment (info@bluecoathistory.co.uk). The archive is listed on the National Archives database.


The archive is divided into four sections, one for each period of the school’s history and contains over 250 items which are listed in a database catalogue. A printout of the catalogue is available on request and upon the payment of a small charge to cover administration costs. A brief summary is noted below.

There are a large number of letters, receipts and documents from the period 1863-1871, many of the them written by Sir George Airy, astronomer royal, who was a trustee and Admiral W.A.B. Hamilton, who was on the staff at Greenwich Hospital and treasurer to the school. There is also a copy of Airy’s “Statement on the History and Position of the Blue-coat Girls' School, Greenwich”, published in 1867.
